About Us

World Shotokan Karate-do Federation in Australia

WSKF has been operating in Australia since the early 1990’s.  Many of the seniors of WSKF (Aust) were formerly members of Shotokan Karate International Australia (SKIA) whose Chief Instructor was Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa.

Since 2001, WSKF (Aust) has had Sensei Howard Mutton, 6th Dan, as its Chief Instructor.  Sensei Mutton is based in Perth, Western Australia and has been operating dojo there for over 30 years. One of his roles as chief instructor is to ensure both a high technical level of karate in Australia,  as well as maintaining a consistency of style throughout the organisation.  He does this by travelling to all clubs during the year.

Perth currently has 4 dojo located in Doubleview, Maylands, Greenwood and Queens Park.  Our Queens Park club is run by Linda Lim-Scriven and is quite unique in that it caters solely for women.  Grant Rollinson heads up the Doubleview and Greenwood dojos, and these have a healthy mix of both adults and children. Maylands, just north of the city, is run by Mark Madden and Howard Mutton and is the newest dojo in WSKF Western Australia.

In 2003, Portland dojo joined WSKF (Aust).  Portland is a coastal town approximately 400kms south of Melbourne.  The husband and wife team of Stephen and Shelley Hol operate this very successful club and have a great following within the local community.

Early in 2006, Michael Looke joined our organisation with his dojo in Springfield Queensland.  Located half way between Brisbane city and the Gold Coast, Michael runs a very vibrant group training 4 nights a week and has close links with the Union Institute Of Language University in Queensland.

The organisation of WSKF (Aust) follows along a very traditional path and our philisophy of training is simply to teach a high standard of technical karate and not to deviate from Shotokan principles.  Our karate is not one of “instant gratification” that seems so prevalent in today’s world.  We take a longer term view with our training and adhere closely to the philosphy of the international head of WSKF, Sensei Hitoshi Kasuya who, in turn, has brought our style of Shotokan closer to the original karate principles  promulgated by the founder of Shotokan  Karate, Sensei Gichin Funakoshi.
